History of THE AICNT

Conveyancing Agents licences began to be granted in the Northern Territory in 1993 when the legislation first was passed, and the Australian Institute of Conveyancers NT Division was soon registered.

One of the early achievements of the very small Committee was to arrange and host the National Conference of the Australian Institute of Conveyancers in Darwin in 1996 (In 2015 it was held in WA). Conveyancers from all over Australia seized the opportunity to come to Darwin and participate in the various activities, such as Mindil Beach Markets, a welcoming ceremony at Government House addressed by Austin Asche, and a starlight dinner/BBQ in Fannie Bay Goal as well as many educational conferences throughout the long weekend. The event is still talked about and many couldn’t believe how we arranged such prestigious locations.

Many presidents of the AIC NT, are to be congratulated on their tireless input into the consolidation and growth of the profession, including the implementation and amendment of various legislation. These include Jeff Hockley (dec’d), Bill Palmer (dec’d), Nick Thomas (dec’d), Trish McIntyre, Trevor Tschirpig, John Douglas, Sonia Roberts & Kristin Bannerman, Nicole Myler, Theresa Cocks and Susan Carmody.

In 2014 the AICNT Committee has arranged the commencement of the Certified Practising Conveyancers (CPC) program which entails an ongoing educational program for those who have been licensed for 3 years or more. There are now more than 30 licensed Conveyancing Agents in the Northern Territory.

2023 – 30 Years Conveyancing in the Northern Territory.
This year we are celebrating 30 Years strong in the Northern Territory where legislation that was past in 1993 gave Conveyancers the opportunity to operate in their own businesses. We celebrated on 29 May 2023 at a reception held at Govt House addressed by His Honour Professor the Honourable Hugh Heggie PSM.
